EARTHING/GROUNDING MEASUREMENTS

According to the earthing regulations in electrical facilities directive, earthing measurements in electrical installations and body protection earthing measurements of electrically operated machines should be performed in the scope of Occupational Safety, in factories, hospitals, hotels, sports complexes and education/training facilities.

It should not be forgotten that the electrical current would always choose the easiest and the lowest-resistant path. Therefore;

in order to protect human health and the life span of devices, earthing must be done against the risk of electrical leakage and the functioning of earthing should be checked by regular earthing measurements.

The purpose of grounding is to ensure that the stray electricity flows to the ground by means of a conductor. Therefore;

it has a vital importance in terms of occupational health and safety against the risk of a potential electrical leakage that can occur in both end-user points (sockets, etc.) and in electrically operated devices.

In a grounded system;

When a person touches a conductor (product, material, etc.) with an electricity leakage, the electric current passes through the ground wire, not over the person, thus the risk of impact is lifted. For this, it is desirable to have the grounding resistance close to 0 (zero).

On the contrary, when there is no earthing, there can be damages up to life and property losses.

Grounding systems protect the safety of life and property. Earthing measurements are made periodically. These measurements are carried out based on the Article-10 of the Electrical Installations Earthing Regulation, prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and published in the Offical Gazette No. 24500, dated 21 August 2001. The recommended periods for inspection and measurement of grounding facilities during their operating periods are as follows:

– For electricity generation, transmission and distribution facilities (excluding energy transmission and distribution lines): 2 years

– For energy transmission and distribution lines: 5 years

For industrial facilities and trade centers;

– Control and measurement of resistance of grounding: 1 year

– Other inspections, measurements and controls related to earthing facilities: 2 years

– Fixed operating units: 1 year

– Mobile operating units: 6 months

Earthing is a legal obligation. The general provisions on earthing apparatus and earthing facilities laid down in Article 44 of the Electricity Internal Facilities Directive prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and published in the Official Gazette No. 18565, dated 21 August 1984, and Artice 45 of the same Directive related to “Control of protection arrangements against indirect contact to voltage units” comprise the “Safe Use of Work Equipment Directive” published in the Official Gazette No. 28608, dated 25 April 2013.

The devices used in earthing resistance measurements are calibrated at least once a year. Measurements can be carried out by Electrical Engineers, Electrical-Electronics Engineers and Electrical Technicians.

SZUTEST, with its expert staff, carries out ground resistance measurements (earthing measurements), panel controls with thermal cameras, lighting measurements, harmonic measurements and energy analysis within the scope of its TURKAK Accreditation.
