WHAT IS AN ENERGY LABEL?
Energy Labels are an important information tool that indicates the energy efficiency and performance of electrically powered appliances. These labels play a major role in both environmental sustainability and economic savings.
The Energy Label is an information card showing the energy consumption and efficiency of the appliance. These labels are used in countries such as the European Union and Turkey to classify the energy performance of appliances. Energy labels classify appliances from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). This allows consumers to make informed choices about energy consumption.
INFORMATION ON THE ENERGY LABEL
Energy labels contain the following information:
QR Code: Allows access to detailed information about the device.
Name or Trade Mark of the supplier: Manufacturer information.
Model Marking: Model number of the device.
Energy Efficiency Class: Energy efficiency rating from A to G.
Annual Energy Consumption: Annual energy consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh).
Energy labels according to appliance types
Televisions
- SDR and HDR Modes: Energy consumption per 1000 hours in standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR) modes.
- Screen Size and Resolution: Information on screen sizes and resolution.
Refrigerators and Freezers
- Annual Energy Consumption: Annual energy consumption in kilowatt hours.
- Net Volume: Net volume of freezer and fresh food compartment.
- Acoustic Noise Level: Sound level of the appliance during operation.
Dishwashers
- Eco Programme Energy Consumption: Energy consumption in 100 cycles.
- Water Consumption: Water consumption during the Eco programme.
- Programme Duration: Duration of the Eco programme.
Washing Machines
- Energy Consumption: Energy consumption in 100 cycles.
- Water Consumption: Water consumption in 1 cycle.
- Programme Duration: Duration of the Eco programme.
- Spin Efficiency: Spin cycle efficiency class.
Air Conditioners
- Heating and Cooling Mode: Energy efficiency and capacity values in both modes.
- Sound Level: Sound power levels of indoor and outdoor units
Why Are Energy Labels Important?
Energy Labels provide consumers and producers with critical information about energy efficiency, providing both economic and environmental benefits.
- Consumer Information and Savings
Energy Labels show the energy consumption amount and efficiency of products. Thanks to these labels, consumers can reduce energy costs in the long term by choosing energy efficient products. For example, a class A refrigerator consumes much less energy than a class G refrigerator, which means a significant savings on the annual electricity bill.
- Environmental Impact and Sustainability
The use of energy efficient products makes a positive contribution to the environment by reducing energy consumption. Devices that consume less energy reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce the carbon footprint. This is an important step in the fight against climate change. Initiatives such as the European Climate Change Program aim to reduce emissions by increasing energy efficiency.
- Technological Innovation and Producer Incentive
Energy labels encourage manufacturers to develop more efficient and innovative technologies. Energy labels updated by the European Union in 2021 increase energy efficiency standards by encouraging manufacturers to produce products with higher energy classes. This provides consumers with wider and more efficient product options.
- Legal Regulations and Standards
Energy Labels are implemented as a legal obligation in many countries and set minimum standards for energy consumption. These standards aim to increase energy efficiency as part of countries’ energy policies. By applying these regulations in Turkey, control is provided over energy consumption and efficiency.
- Economic and Competitive Advantage
Energy efficient devices reduce the energy costs of businesses and households, while also increasing competitiveness. Businesses that consume less energy can gain a competitive advantage by reducing production costs. Additionally, energy-saving buildings and industrial facilities can benefit from government incentives related to energy efficiency.
Energy labels are of critical importance in increasing consumer awareness, supporting environmental sustainability, providing economic savings and encouraging technological innovations. Correct understanding and use of energy labels provides important contributions at both individual and social levels.
New Energy Labels: A More Comprehensible and Efficient Future
Energy labels are an important guide that provides consumers with energy consumption information of home appliances and electronic devices. In recent years, these labels have undergone significant changes both in Turkey and the European Union.
Why Have Energy Labels Changed?
- Simplified Scale
Old energy labels contained complex classifications such as A+, A++ and A+++. This could be confusing for consumers. In the new system, these classifications were removed and a simple scale from A to G was introduced. This change enables consumers to more easily understand the energy efficiency of products.
- Technological Developments
With the rapid advancement of technology, the energy efficiency of devices has also increased significantly. Therefore, the old label system proved inadequate. The new energy labels are designed to better reflect current and future technological developments. In the first stage, even the most energy efficient products did not qualify for class A; this class is reserved for future more efficient technologies.
- QR Code Usage
The new labels include QR codes. By scanning these codes, consumers can easily access more detailed information about the products. This feature helps make more informed decisions when choosing a product.
Innovations Brought by New Energy Labels
Detailed Information
Energy consumption information has been made more clear on new labels. For example, instead of annual energy consumption in dishwashers, energy consumption per 100 cycles is shown. Televisions contain 1000 hours of energy consumption information. These changes enable consumers to better understand energy efficiency.
Sound Level Information
The new labels also include sound level information. In this way, how much noise the devices produce during operation is evaluated and more comprehensive information is provided to consumers. The sound level classification ranges from A (quietest) to D.
Harmonisation of Turkey
Turkey switched to the new energy labeling system as of March 2021, within the framework of the Customs Union Agreement with the European Union. This situation contributes to consumers in Turkey becoming more conscious about energy efficiency.
